‘God created the earth, but the Dutch created The Netherlands’
This old saying perfectly sums up the engineering marvel that is the Netherlands. Explore the reclaimed land, the dijks, and windmills in a beautiful, countryside setting. You can walk, cycle, or hire a boat with us. Your local guide will share with you how these landscapes were developed, why water is so important for the Dutch, and what they do today to protect themselves from flooding.
Did you know…
Today, approximately 27 percent of the Netherlands is actually below sea level. This area is home to over 60 percent of the country’s population of 15.8 million people. For centuries, the Dutch worked to slowly push back the water of the Zuiderzee, building dijks and creating polders (the term used to describe any piece of land reclaimed from water). Once dijks were built, canals and pumps were used to keep the land dry.
If this sounds like you…
Then this tour is an incredible opportunity to experience the beautiful countryside of the Netherlands and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It is ideal for lovers of nature, the outdoors, history, or engineering!
